Tulodo and the Atabae community prepare materials for the Moris Moos (Clean Life) sanitation campaign

Tulodo has been working with the community in Atabae, Timor-Leste to prepare communications materials for the next phase in the Moris Moos sanitation campaign. With the Moris Moos (Clean Life) communication materials finalised, we conducted a review and training for the Atabae community on 16 August 2018. This training was attended by partners and stakeholders of the Partnership for Human Development (PHD) Hygienic Initiative program in Bobonaro Municipality. Our training introduced the final Moris Moos materials and how to use them in the community.

The training started with an introduction from the Jose Goncalves da Silva, the Chief of Atabae Administrative Post and Carlos Miguel, the PHD WASH Municipal Coordinator, with an introduction from Khandker Hossain, the PHD WASH Lead. First we presented thef Moris Moos campaign, its objectives, target audiences, and communication materials produced.

In the second session we introduced examples of campaigns conducted in formal and community settings. This included the handwashing with soap (HWWS) campaigns in school settings in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.. Activities include billboards located in front of handwashing stations, comic books and board games, and teaching students to maintain and keep the toilet clean. The WASH United program in Uganda, Ethiopia, Lesotho and Kenya used a community based circus, sports, and advertisements on public transport .

The third session was the role play for a utilization of the communication materials. Participants were divided into two groups consists of 8-9 people. Each participant then was given a communication material and given time to learn it, including the key messages. After that, participants were asked to present the communication materials as if other participants were households. Other participants were given a form to evaluate the presenter.

The fourth session was the focus group discussion on the plan on a utilisation of the communication materials in a formal setting and in the community setting. Participants were divided into two groups. One group was asked to discuss the utilization of Moris Moos communication materials in the formal setting and another group discussed the utilization of Moris Moos communication materials in the community settings. In the formal setting, the participants designed an intervention in the kindergarten/ pre-school whilst in the community settings, participants proposed a number of activities.

Each group then was asked to present their discussion results. The first group proposed an intervention at the school setting (in kindergarten). The target group identified was the students. They identified school as the appropriate channels to educate children as early as possible regarding the importance of handwashing with soap. The proposed activities include building handwashing station at school, demonstrating handwashing with soap to students, and showing videos. Moris Moos communication materials can be used in the activities such as stickers that can be used and distributed to target audiences.

The second group proposed an intervention in the community setting. The target groups identified are households and students in Atabae. The proposed activities include: promoting handwashing with soap practice among households through handwashing campaign. Households are asked to build or provide tippy tap at their house. The materials that can be used in this activity are pamphlets and banners. The other activities are showing videos to the community in a special event. Banner and billboards and other communication materials can be used for these activities.

The last session was the presentation from HealthNet, the implementing partner for PHD for the Hygienic Initiative program in Atabae, regarding the progress of the coupon program and discussion about the next plan until November 2018. We hope that the Moris Moos communication materials can support the Hygienic Initiative program to achieve its goals and objectives and have a positive impact on the households sanitation related behavior in Atabae.
