Tulodo appointed by UNICEF Indonesia to manage campaign on post-disaster child protection.

Tulodo is pleased to announce our appointment by UNICEF Indonesia to support their work to help children affected by disasters in Lombok and Palu. Major earthquakes and tsunamis in 2018 devastated Lombok and Palu. The combined effect of the two disasters led to the death of more than 3,000 people with more than 10,000 others injured and more than 200,000 forced to flee their homes and become displaced. Hundreds of schools were damaged and children traumatised by their experience of the disasters.

Children and adolescents are highly vulnerable to disasters, in part due to their young age, dependency needs and developmental status. Those who have been orphaned or separated from their families are at higher risk of abuse, violence, neglect and exploitation. In post-disaster settings, research shows that the voices of children are often not heard. All too often, children are relegated to the margins. Without parental protection, they are more vulnerable to illegal adoption, child marriage, violence and trafficking. These risks rise sharply immediately from the onset of an emergency.

The good news is that there are proven responses to help these children and their families. Successful interventions to promote emotional wellbeing and health to protect children against adverse outcomes adopt a resilience approach. These often consist of strengthening supportive factors in the social ecology of the child. Such interventions can include educating adults who provide care (parents, family members, teachers, paediatricians, and other professional staff) about how to help a distressed child.

To help UNICEF deliver these services, Tulodo will develop an entertainment-education behavior change communication campaign. This is designed to both entertain and educate, by incorporating health and social issues into powerful storytelling used as a catalyst for behavior change. The method is considered one of the most effective creative approaches to improve health and social impact because it involves the target audience as part of the movement in a fun and non-intimidating way. Proposed activities include the development of radio shows, community based events and social media content. We look forward to sharing our progress along the way.

About UNICEF Indonesia

UNICEF Indonesia’s country programme (2016–2020) is based on equity. It works to realize the rights for children – especially for the most deprived and excluded – as enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and articulated in Indonesia’s National Medium-Term Development Plan. UNICEF supports the Government to put children first and invest in children’s survival, development and protection. UNICEF assists partners to monitor and measure progress against these rights via the child-focused Sustainable Development Goals, with an emphasis on the most vulnerable children. UNICEF’s interventions are rights-based, cut across different sectors, respond to the specific needs of girls and boys and address the vulnerabilities and strengths of children. UNICEF has a strong on-the-ground presence in Indonesia, with seven regional and sub-regional offices. These are primarily in areas with the greatest disparities and service gaps. They complement UNICEF’s high-level policy and programme advice with practical support for planning, financing and service delivery, especially to advocate for quality, equity and sustainability.
